Rome Looked Like a Movie and Felt Like Home

Staubbach Falls dropping behind the village church in Lauterbrunnen, under a blue sky full of clouds

First time in Europe, and I had a movie playing in my head: golden light, cobbled lanes, a violin somewhere, everything dreamy and perfectly in order. That movie lasted about forty minutes in Rome. The real thing turned out to be better.

Eleven days, two countries, no rental car: Rome and the Vatican, a sunset in Florence, a train day that went spectacularly off-plan, the Swiss Alps around Interlaken, and one last evening walk through Milan.

This one has its own page, with postcards, polaroids, a departure board and a field guide to supplì.
